(American, b. 1997) Untitled, 1996 Color photocopy montage Gift of the Artist KennedyÕs untitled large-scale installation is and is not a portrait.
The work portrays a new approach to what constitutes the self, building
upon the ideas of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. Lacan maintains
that individual human identity is not a seamless entityÑwhole, immutable,
and singular. Rather, he claims, it is a conflicted plurality. Using
transparencies of Polaroid images that have been layered and photocopied,
Kennedy makes images of a human face that are at once physicaly solid
and yet ghostlike. This disquieting image then proliferates into a multitude
of fragments. |
