Viola Frey Frey is best known as a ceramist of large-scale female figures, although
this work proves she is also a skilled draughtsman. In this scene of an
artists studio, imposing womenÑher trademarkÑanimate the space. In FreyÕs
lexicon, larger-than-life women suggest the self-determination and authority
of women. ÒI donÕt think one gets anywhere by portraying women as victims,Ó
Frey wrote. ÒI knew women who had control over their lives, who maintained
their power. My mother ran the farm, kept the books, wrote the checks.
. . . I had strong women as role models. You donÕt feel sorry for my [sculpture
of a] six-foot grandmother with a splashy dress.Ó |
