Leaving Traces: Art and Lingering Proof
Friday, May 2, 2003
6:00 p.m.
From the 25,000 year-old negative hand imprints on the cave walls
at Pech-Merle to contemporary artist Rachel Whiteread's House on Grove
Street, humans have attempted to mark and prove presence by capturing
and keeping traces of reality. Artists of the modern era have self-consciously
exploited the nature of the trace a responses-both negative and positive-to
modern life. This talk by Trace Evidence curator, Diane Mullin, will
illustrate and discuss this artistic strategy in its many guises and
contexts.
