Visit several of Ralph RapsonÕs major buildings on and nearby the University of MinnesotaÕs Minneapolis campus, including the Southeast Minneapolis Public Library, Rarig Center, and Riverside Plaza. Tickets must be purchased in advance in the Weisman Museum Store. Participants will drive their own cars and meet in the lobby of the Southeast Minneapolis Public Library at 1:30 p.m.

Preserving Modern Buildings: Prospects and Dilemmas

The recent demolition of RapsonÕs Pillsbury residence points to the vulnerability of notable buildings that are less than fifty years old, the age necessary for them to be eligible for the National Historic Register. As part of Historic Preservation Week, this panel will consider both the compelling reasons to save some modern buildings and the challenges their preservation poses.

From Andrew Jackson DowningÕs nineteenth-century designs for American homes to Frank Lloyd WrightÕs Usonian houses to model homes featured at worldÕs fairs and in Life magazine, the design of American homes has drawn the intensive attention of architects. John Burns, Head of the Historic American Buildings Survey, National Park Service, will discuss RapsonÕs residential designs within the broader context of the history of American home design and changing visions of the future.

Learn about Ralph RapsonÕs innovative design for the Guthrie Theatre in a guided tour that will go behind the scenes. Then, visit two private residences in University Grove, a neighborhood in Falcon Heights that features many houses designed by Rapson. Tickets must be purchased in advance in the Weisman Museum Store. Participants will drive their own cars and meet in the lobby of the Guthrie Theatre at 10:30 a.m.
