Gary Hallman (American, 1940- )
Passage #2, 1995
Ink-jet print on graphic canvas
Lent by the artist
Gary HallmanŐs photographs combine businessmen and suburban homes in meditations
on masculinity, work, and home life. To create his final pictures, Hallman photographed
himself in his studio, often in a business suit. Using a computer, he manipulated the
original photographs and combined them with others, usually a background image of
suburban landscapes, which he shot in the high-growth St. Paul suburb of Woodbury.
In this dream-like image, a disembodied suit floats in the landscape. As the uniform
of the businessman, the suit signifies the loss of personal identity in the
working world. Hallman sees the house forms as a sign of the emotional life
that men leave behind when they go to work.
