Nightclub Scene, c. 1935
by Paul Meltsner (b. 1905)
Watercolor on paper

Although little is known of Paul Meltsner's career beyond a few exhibitions in the 1930s, those exhibitions reveal the strange mix of concerns of Depression-era American artists. Meltsner drew heroic scenes of industrial workers and labor unrest, as well as bright, lively scenes of New York theaters and burlesques, like Nightclub Scene.
