Interior Scene, 1937 by Jacob Lawrence (b. 1917) Tempera on paper Interior Scene is among the artist's earliest paintings. Raised amidst the cultural vitality of the Harlem Renaissance, Lawrence was perhaps the first visual artist to develop a style that seemed natural to African-American subject matter. His clean drawing and sense of pattern and color bring his narratives to life, yet are distinct from the European naturalist tradition. Interior Scene brings us inside a brothel, where the artifacts of drug use, poverty and prostitution are presented beneath a bare light bulb. |
