Bombs Away, 1942 by Rockwell Kent, (1882-1971)
Rockwell Kent was among the most vocal of America's social commentary artists,
yet his political views were seldom a feature of his art. After the bombing of Pearl
Harbor in December, 1941, however, Kent's artwork and prose became fully dedicated to
an American victory at war. Bombs Away was a part of a small group of political pictures
included in his 1942 exhibition, Know and Defend America. In this work, Kent plays with the
contrast between old age (perhaps representing Allied Europe) and youth (the United States).
