by Dorothea Lange (American, 1895Ð1965) Gelatin silver print Museum Purchase This image was used in the 1939 book American Exodus, the account of migrant workers illustrated by Lange and written by Paul Taylor, her husband. Taylor, an economist at the University of California at Berkeley, was hired by the California State Emergency Relief Administration in 1934 to investigate the living conditions of the thousands who migrated to California from the Midwest and the South following the dust storms that ravaged those parts of the country. Their work together inspired the later American Exodus, their wider examination of migration patterns across the United States. |
