Alfred Maurer:
The First American Modern

home commentary images related events education

The dramatic development of this artist is the focal point of the exhibition, Alfred Maurer: The First American Modern, which will be featured at the Weisman Art Museum from February 5 - April 24, 2005. Alfred Maurer (1868-1932), often referred to as "the first American modern," was one of the most prolific and progressive artists of the period. Modernism has been defined as art that makes a self-conscious break with previous genres, and Maurer fits the description precisely. Consisting of over 40 works spanning from 1897 to 1930, this broad presentation affords museum-goers the opportunity to see Maurer's vision progress and mature over the years.
