About the Exhibition

In the Spirit of Martin: The Living Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is the first major exhibition of visual arts dedicated to celebration of this American hero. The exhibition features 115 paintings, photographs, works on paper, prints, sculpture, and mixed media pieces by artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, and Charles White. By juxtaposing historical accounts in Dr. King's life with visual renderings of those events, In the Spirit of Martin speaks to the power of art to shape collective national memory.

In the Spirit of Martin was created and developed by Gary Chassman, Verve Editions, and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition service in cooperation with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

The presentation of In the Spirit of Martin: The Living Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Weisman Art Museum is made possible through the generous support of The St. Paul Companies, Inc. Foundation. Additional funding is provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Star Tribune Foundation, and Target, Marshall Field's and Mervyn's with support from the Target Foundation.

Additional operating support for the Weisman Art Museum is provided by the Boss Foundation; the Chadwick Foundation; the Dorsey and Whitney Foundation; the General Mills Foundation; the Art and Martha Kaemmer Fund of HRK Foundation; the R. C. Lilly Foundation; Lowry Hill; Wells Fargo Foundation Minnesota; Xcel Energy Foundation; the Minnesota State Arts Board; the Colleagues of the Weisman Art Museum; and the University of Minnesota.

Additional program sponsorship provided by College of Liberal Arts Scholarly Events Fund, Women's Studies, Art, Afro-American and African Studies, American Studies, and Office for Multicultural and Academic Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
