Lawrence commented "What did I see when I arrived in Harlem in 1930? I was thirteen years of age.
I remember seeing the movement, the life, the people, the excitement. We were going
through a great, great depression at that time, but despite that, I think there was
always hope. We lived through a hope that tomorrow there would be another quart of
milk on the table, there would be another loaf of bread on the table, we'd be able
to pay the rent. I was a youngster at the time--our parents were going through
this--but as far as I can remember, there was always this hope, a feeling of uplift."
