Charles Biederman (1906-2004):
In Memoriam

home commentary images related events education

Charles Biederman was an acclaimed American abstract modernist whose pioneering work was from the beginning inspired by nature. As a young artist, Biederman lived in the thriving art centers of Chicago, Paris, and New York where he experimented with most of the new artistic styles known as modernist. He developed his most notable and original work, however, while living in Red Wing Minnesota, where he moved in 1942 and remained until the end of his life. During the years in rural Minnesota, Biederman ventured on a personal search for a new way of seeing, a new vision of nature, and a new art. Also in during this time, he published a number of works on philosophy, science and art. Biederman’s work and related papers have been held by the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum since (DATE) as a promised bequest and will now become a part of the permanent collection. The exhibition, Charles Biederman (1906-2004): In Memoriam, includes examples of Biederman’s distinct stylistic periods. It is offered as a tribute to one of Minnesota’s most daring and vivacious artists whose continual searching resulted in a truly original body of work and ideas.
