This detail of the base of the arched showing stenciled walls, painted and gilded plasterwork, and Teco green terra cotta. Although most of the ornamentation of the Owatonna bank was designed by George Elmslie, he asserted that the design on the underside of the arch was the only one that could be attributed solely to Louis Sullivan. Scholars have labored to trace Sullivan's ornament to a variety of sources, including Frank Funess, Gothic design, the Morrish archiecture of Spain, and the work of nineteenth-century English and French designers.
