Group Tours
Get students looking, thinking, and talking!
Let us work with you to expand your classroom and create challenging opportunities to learn about and from original works of art.

Many teachers prefer to work with a Weisman tour guide who has been trained to facilitate careful looking and discussion of the art while others choose to lead their own tours through the museum. Tours generally run one hour.

Book a Tour
Tour group size may be from 10 to 50 visitors.
Both guided and self-guided visits should be scheduled three weeks in advance.
Schedule your visit with Jamee Yung at jtyung@umn.edu or 612-625-9656.
For help designing a customized tour, contact Judi Petkau at petka001@umn.edu or 612-625-9623.

Suggested tour and workshop topics:

Focus on the Current Exhibition
Spend your visit focused on the objects and issues explored in our current exhibition. We can design this tour around thematic links to your curriculum. Grades K-Adult

Introduction to the Weisman Art Museum
For the first-time visitor, this is an overview of the museum building design, selections from the permanent collection of twentieth-century American art, and temporary exhibitions. Grades K-Adult

Architecture of the Weisman Art Museum
Students will focus on the Weisman's distinctive building and learn about the design process of Frank O. Gehry, one of the world's most celebrated architects. Students also will explore innovative and surprising artworks in the galleries. Grades K-Adult

Thinking Visually
Works of art are complex visual objects that invite multiple interpretations. For students in all disciplines, investigating art is an excellent way to build observation skills and practice high-level thinking, such as reasoning, perspective-taking, problem-finding, and metaphor-making. This engaging, discussion-based tour gets students thinking about their thinking as they work together to puzzle out meanings from visual information. Grades 3-Adult

Artful Writing Workshops
For many students, visual images provide a valuable link to engaging thoughtfully, critically, and creatively in the process of writing. The Weisman offers three ninety-minute writing workshops that may be taken in sequence or individually. These workshops are limited to thirty students or less. Grades 4-Adult

  1. Perception — Students practice careful observation and looking skills while discussing and responding to diverse artworks. Writing activities stress observing detail and using one's senses.
  2. Building Meaning — Students explore how they build interpretations from artworks and consider different perspectives. Writing activities stress observing detail, finding questions, shifting perspectives, and drawing conclusions.
  3. Creating Meaning — Students connect their interpretations of artworks with the process of creating their own meaningful written work. Writing activities stress connections to self, creating metaphors, and expressing new ideas.

Public Art on Campus
The University of Minnesota campus is home to a diverse collection of innovative public art projects. This outdoor walking tour is available May through October, limited to thirty, and may focus on the East or West Bank of the Minneapolis campus, or on the Saint Paul campus. Grades 3-Adult

Token Response
What artwork catches your eye? Why? This interactive gallery game encourages careful looking, personal connection, and reasoned responses about art in a fun and engaging way. Grades 3-Adult

Element Prizes
Designed for younger students, this gallery activity promotes observation skills and develops vocabulary about the elements of art. Grades K-2

Drawing in the Galleries
Students are welcome to sketch and draw in the museum using dry media. Folding stools are available. Grades K-Adult

Art Study
With advance notice, Weisman objects not currently on exhibit can be requested from storage for viewing. Art Study visits are limited to ten students or less. A visit may be combined with a larger tour, allowing students to visit in shifts.

Extend your Classroom
Let us help you design your own tour or workshop. We welcome ideas and requests for customized programs to fit your curricula and meet your students' learning goals. For help designing the right tour for your group, contact Judi Petkau at 612-625-9623.

Special Needs
Guided tours in languages other than English may be arranged in advance. With advance notice, Weisman guides will adapt tours to best serve visitors with disabilities.
