U of M students: research

classes research volunteer

Students are encouraged to use museum collections and exhibitions for research projects related to their course work. Information about the collection is available from director of education Colleen Sheehy at (612) 625-9677 or sheeh001@umn.edu or from the curator’s office at (612) 626-3561. For works of art not on view in the exhibition galleries, appointments can be made to study pieces in the museum’s Louise and Malcolm McCannel Art Study Room. For appointments, contact associate registrar Laura Muessig at (612) 625-9672 or muess001@umn.edu. Please plan on ample lead time for appointments.

Artwords: An Annual Creative Writing Contest
Each spring semester, the Weisman teams up with the Creative Writing Program in the Department of English to sponsor a writing contest for students registered in Creative Writing courses. Students select a work on view in the Weisman’s permanent collection galleries and write a one-page creative piece in prose or poetry, taking inspiration from a work of art. Judges review the entries, prizes are awarded for graduate and undergraduates, and a public reading is held. Winning entries then appear on labels next to the related art work. For more information on Artwords, contact director of education Colleen Sheehy at (612) 625-9677 or sheeh001@umn.edu.
